“..because he might suit the sponsor” – Hendrick Motorsports kicked out ‘Punk’ Kyle Busch to make way for ‘Wholesome’ Dale Earnhardt Jr

Before Kyle Busch spent 15 years with Joe Gibbs Racing, he used to race for their bitter rivals, Hendrick Motorsports. But after racing with Hendrick for a few seasons, he found himself driverless. During an interview, Busch explains the reason why he was replaced by none other than Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Busch said, “So from 2000, yeah 2000, I was in Hendrick from 2005, six, seven, and during that time I was kinda punk and fooling around on TV here or there whatever . I had Kellogs as a sponsor and they didn’t like it too much and they wanted a healthier guy and whatever, so yeah.

Busch basically pointed out that Hendrick picked someone who was boring after being unable to deal with his punk persona.

Later in the interview, future Richard Childress Racing driver explained how he was kicked out compared to the other Hendrick Motorsport driver. Despite the fact that Busch had already won several Cup Series races while the other had not even won a single Cup Series race yet.

Busch said, “I was going to lose my sponsor anyway, so it was going to basically lose my job. But Junior was also leaving DEI and trying to find a place where he would go and have his new home to race. So him coming in and me having a kind of a tough time, it was easy for them to say, Kyle is out, it’s over.

He continued, “The other guy who was there, they kept another guy who never won a Cup race. I was a winner and I was a four-time Cup Series winner and the other guy never won a race. So they kept it on me just because it might suit the sponsor. Kellogs stayed with this other guy.

However, since then, a lot of time has passed, but the animosity towards the Hendrick cars on the track remains. Busch ultimately came out on top, if the number of championships won in the series is to be a determining factor.
