Damon Hill says Latifi should be sacked | thejudge13

The era of paying drivers in Formula 1 is not yet over. The son of Aston Martin owner Lance Stroll has contributed just 20 per cent of the team’s points this season despite racing against an aging Sebastian Vettel. Similarly at Williams, the father of their Canadian driver Nicholas Latifi contributed around $40 million to the team’s budget in the last financial release. Damon Hill thinks it’s time for Latifi to be fired by Williams. Latifi finished 21st in the drivers standings in his first full season in 2020 3 places behind teammate George Russell who scored the only points for the team.

While latifi scored in 2022, his 7s were less than half of the 16 scored by Russell.

This year again, the Canadian driver finds himself 21st after 16 races and no points, while the rookie and 1 F1 driver Nyck de Vries has two points and is ahead of him in the driver standings.

Latest push to place American driver on 2023 F1 grid

Driving for the back of the grid teams often disguises how good or bad the drivers are, but after almost 3 seasons Latifi is clearly not good enough for Formula 1.

When the Sky anchor suggested we should feel sorry for the Williams pilot, Damon Hill retorted, “I’m sorry but that’s how it is.”

“In this case, Nicholas doesn’t have the pace he needs to stay in this position in Formula 1.

“He’s had some good times, but then comes a guy who hasn’t even raced in the Grand Prix before, and he’s done a fantastic job. i know he [De Vries] had grid penalties and stuff like that, which helped him up the grid, but he still delivered in qualifying and didn’t really make a mistake.

“He has done enough to be talked about, he has Toto [Wolff] talk about him. That’s what it takes to be a Formula 1 driver.”

De Vries worked wonders when called up at the last minute to replace Alex Albon who was diagnosed with appendicitis on Saturday morning at Monza.

While Latifi failed to make it out of Q1, de Vries not only qualified for the second session, but due to his unfamiliarity with the car’s controls, he accidentally changed the brake bias, causing him to slip into the 2nd Lesmo.

The young Dutch driver qualified 13th but could easily have been 11th or even assumed Alonso’s time and qualified for Q3.

New Aston Martin driver announced

Toto Wolff was De Vries’ boss until earlier this year when Nyck drove for the Mercedes Formula E team, winning the drivers’ championship.

“Nyck was an official Mercedes driver until we stopped Formula E a few weeks ago and he won the championship for us, our first world championship,” Wolff praised.

“But we don’t have a management contract with him, we have no influence on his career and we don’t take any cuts from his future earnings.

“Nyck deserves to have a place in F1. He showed it due to the limited experience he had of driving with the rake in FP1.

“Then he was thrown in the cold in FP3, not even at the start but at the end – it’s a line in the sand. It lays down a marker.

Nyck De Vries is linked with Williams for 2023, but with funds provided by Sofina sponsoring Latifi, it is unclear whether he or Albon would leave the Grove-based team.

“I think we forget how dominant he was in F2. He was absolutely brilliant in his first Formula E championship when he won the championship,” concluded Toto

“He’s going to do what the car is capable of doing. It will certainly extract what is there.

Due to complications from Albon’s surgery where he suffered respiratory failure, it is uncertain if he will return for the Singapore GP in two weeks, or if De Vries will replace again putting in more pressure on Latifi.
