Ferrari has had a relationship with tobacco giant Philip Morris since the 1980s, with the PMI Marlboro brand serving as the team’s title sponsor from 1997 until early 2008.
A crackdown on tobacco advertising meant the Marlboro branding had to be removed from the car, but PMI has overhauled its title sponsorship of the team through its Mission Winnow initiative which was launched in 2018 with a view to a future without tobacco.
Mission Winnow was dropped from both Ferrari’s official entry name and car sponsorship ahead of the 2022 season, as well as from the team’s sponsor platform earlier this year when the deal expired .
But it was revealed ahead of the Australian Grand Prix earlier this month that Mission Winnow has returned as an official Ferrari team partner.
Speaking to Autosport about the new deal with PMI, Ferrari F1 boss Binotto said it was important to maintain the long-standing relationship, even if the nature of the deal had changed.
“It is important to know that this is a long partnership with Philip Morris, and we are very proud of it, and very happy that it is still going on,” said Binotto.
“That was the intention of both parties, because after so many years it was important to stick together.
“Yes, it has changed a bit in the way the partnership is set up, without going into too much detail.
“But in the end, it’s more important to make sure it continued.”

As title partner, Mission Winnow’s green logo featured on the bonnet of Ferrari cars at some events last year, but has been removed for all European Union races.
Ahead of the 2022 campaign, Ferrari announced that Spanish bank Santander had returned as a premium partner, alongside Shell, blockchain network Velas and tech brand Snapdragon.
Next weekend’s Miami Grand Prix is set to be a key commercial race for all F1 teams, building on the series’ current boom in the United States.
“There is a lot of interest in Miami, I think for us too the American market like Ferrari is important,” Binotto said.
“But we can also see for our sponsors that the overall business of F1 is doing well at the moment. We are all very happy. I think it will be an enjoyable weekend and event.”
