How extensive is the flood damage in Kentucky?

The floods washed away roads and bridges, engulfed families’ homes and many lost power – and it’s still dangerous for water rescues in some areas. With more rain forecast, the situation is likely to worsen. Some areas have lost access to drinking water and restoring services could take weeks.

What do flood-affected children and families in Eastern Kentucky need, right?

With hundreds of children and families dealing with loss and uncertainty, they may not know when they will return to their normal routine. Some children may not yet know where their friends and family members are. This can be a very scary and stressful situation for children.

Some areas have lost access to drinking water and restoring services could take weeks. Families need essential supplies like clean water, food, hygiene products, diapers, cleaning supplies and a safe place to live.

How is Save the Children helping children and families affected by flooding in Kentucky?

With emergency supplies pre-positioned ahead of the floods, Save the Children staff are working to deliver essential items to children, families and communities in Eastern Kentucky, including water, cash cards , hygiene kits, nappies, wipes, cribs and cleaning products for schools. .

With three schools already declared a total loss, we are also engaging local early learning partners to meet the needs of area schools and early learning and child care centers.

We also provide art activity kits, games and toys to children and families at area shelters, so kids have the opportunity to be kids again.
