The South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa announced on Sunday that it is extending its title sponsorship of the NASCAR fall race to Las Vegas.
The announcement came in conjunction with news from Las Vegas Motor Speedway (LVMS) that the site is also extending its relationship with the top stock car racing series in the United States. LVMS holds two races a year for NASCAR’s top series — one in the spring and one in the fall — and South Point has been the title sponsor since the fall race began in 2018.
LVMS and South Point owner Michael Gaughn, a longtime off-road racer, have had a relationship since the speedway opened in 1996.
The Gaughn family and the entire South Point team have become family to us at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and we are thrilled to continue to have South Point as a major part of our NASCAR Cup Series playoff run,” said Chris Powell, president of LVMS, in a statement.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the 2023 iteration of the South Point 400 will be the opening race of the NASCAR Cup Playoff Round of 16, as it was on Sunday. NASCAR released its schedule for next year in September with the South Point 400 scheduled for October 15, 2023.
NASCAR is not afraid of game sponsorships
For years, NASCAR has dwelt in the “other” category among sports betting. The ranking is reserved for fewer sports bets, such as golf and tennis. While auto racing may never reach the heights of football or basketball, NASCAR and gaming operators see an opportunity as the sport is conducive to dozens of unique bets, props and live bets .
However, the stock car series is not shy about allowing casinos to be title sponsors of the race. The South Point 400 is one of three such events on the 2022 schedule. FireKeepers Casino – a tribal gaming venue – sponsored August’s race at Michigan International Speedway while Penn Entertainment’s Hollywood Casino was the authorized sponsor of the September Race at Kansas Speedway. Officially, this race has been renamed “Hollywood Casino 400 presented by Barstool Sportsbook”.
The spring race at LVMS was sponsored by Penzoil. The Las Vegas track is one of twelve that hosts two points races each year in NASCAR’s top series.
South Point Sunday Drama
There was no shortage of drama at the South Point 400 yesterday. During Stage 2 of the race, defending series champion Kyle Larson, who was knocked out of the playoffs in the previous round, made a aggressive gesture on Bubba Wallace. This created a wreck that ensnared the current round of eight entrants Christopher Bell.
Wallace was unhappy with the move and was later seen shoving Larson. Prior to the scrum, Wallace led 29 laps and won the first stage of the race.
Penske driver and former series champion Joey Logano won the race, securing himself a championship four spot in the process.
