SSFC becomes main sponsor of Mowza Does The States!

A charity champion is set to tackle one of his biggest challenges this weekend – with a little helping hand from South Shields FC.

carl mowattmanager of the club’s catering provider, the Lakeside Inn, is aiming to run 50 miles in under 10 hours on Sunday to benefit the Guide Dogs charity.

This is his fourth such assignment for the charity as he seeks to fund his fourth guide dog, who will be named by Mariners fans after the club became the main sponsor of the event.

The ‘Mowza Does The States’ fundraiser will see Carl reach four northeastern locations that share a name with a location in the US: New York (near Whitley Bay), Palmersville (North Tyneside), Washington and Philadelphia.

It will start and end at Gypsies Green in South Shields, with Carl being greeted by a team of supporters including South Shields FC club mascot Sandy and South Tyneside Mayor Councilor Pat Hay.

Carl started supporting Guide Dogs after the death of his friend Andy Briggs, who was blind.

Her first 100-mile challenge funded a guide dog named Andy, and after seeing the impact of the 18-month-old pooch, her motivation to keep helping is strong.

Carl said: “It’s a cause close to my heart and while it won’t be easy, it’s within my abilities.

“I’m going to hurt myself a little for a day, but it will change someone’s life for the better in a spectacular way, so it will be totally worth it.

“The support from South Shields FC has taken my breath away and it is such generosity that makes it all possible.

“I am extremely grateful for every donation that has been made so far.”

Each guide dog costs £5,000 and thanks to three challenges so far, Carl has raised just under £18,000.

He will start on Sunday at 7 am and will be joined at various points along the route by other runners.

Everyone is invited to participate in parts of the race, with Carl asking them to donate at least £10. They will receive in return a T-shirt marking the event.

The dogs funded by Carl’s efforts so far are named Andy, Mowza and Molly, with South Shields fans set to have the chance to name dog number four.

South Shields FC chairman Geoff Thompson said: “The club are delighted to be title sponsor of this fantastic fundraising challenge and happy to fully support Carl.

“What Carl has already achieved is incredible, and we wish him great success with this event.

“We are thrilled to be a part of it and to have the chance to name the guide dog if and when Carl is successful.

“We will then contact our fans and run a contest to name the dog, so we encourage our supporters to support Carl however they can.”
