Texas State Student Raises Enough Money To Adopt Abandoned Baby

A Texas State student has raised enough money to adopt a 3-month-old baby found abandoned in a trash heap in Haiti and covered in fire ants.

Jimmy Amisial launched a Fundraising GoFundMe in July to raise $60,000 to pay for the costly adoption, but received over $167,000. The extra money will be donated to local orphanages in Haiti and will go toward the child’s future and to help pay Amisial’s school fees.

Amisial has named the boy Emilio Angel Jeremiah, who is now 5 years old. Amisial’s grandmother cared for Emilio while the former attended school in Texas. Amisial told Express-News last month that he visits Haiti twice a year and hopes his family will move to the United States soon.

“It hasn’t been easy, but it’s been a blessing,” Amisial wrote on the GoFundMe page. “One thing I know is that you can never go wrong when choosing love.”

Amisial, who was 22 at the time, took the child home after finding him covered in fire ants in 2017 while on his way to a New Year’s Eve party in Haiti. After reporting the incident, Amisial was told he could become the child’s guardian and has been working to become the child’s legal guardian since 2019.

“I was looking at the precious living soul, just crying, and my heart dropped in my throat,” Amisial told the Express-News last month.

The fundraiser was still accepting donations on Monday, when the last donation was made. More than 3,800 people donated.

“Thank you for all your kind words and blessings,” Amisial wrote in an August 28 page update. “My sincere thanks to you guys. Thank you for your continued support.”
