The crew of the Royal Navy’s newest frigate, HMS Glasgow, met the ship’s sponsor, the Princess of Wales, for the first time.
The Type 26 frigate is currently under construction at the BAE Systems shipyard in Govan, Glasgow.
The Royal Navy said in a press release that so far, fifteen sailors have joined the ship, the first contingent of an eventual complement of 161 Royal Navy personnel.
Update of the Type 26 frigate project, first launching this year
The crew were invited to Windsor where they met the Princess of Wales for the first time since her appointment as sponsor of the ship HMS Glasgow was announced in June last year.
“It was a huge honor to be invited to Windsor Castle and to meet Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales,” said Warrant Officer Darran Sullivan, the ship’s Executive Warrant Officer. The appointment of the sponsor signals an enduring bond between the ship’s crew and Her Royal Highness. It is clear from her meeting that she has a genuine interest in HMS Glasgow and the lives of those who will serve on board.
NCO Colin Chalmers, who joined one of HMS Glasgow’s marine engineers last month, echoed that sentiment:
“It was amazing to meet the Princess of Wales, especially as there were so few of us. The moment she walked into the room, her enthusiasm and genuine interest in us really shined through and immediately set us on our toes. comfortable.”
During the visit, the ship’s crew presented His Royal Highness with a ship’s crest from HMS Glasgow and a challenge coin. You can read more here.
