Tlingit and Haida Public Law 102-477 plan amended to sponsor future events

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) – The Central Council of the Alaskan Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes has received notice from the Bureau of Indian Affairs that proposed amendments to the tribe’s Public Law 102-477 five-year plan have been approved.

These changes will allow T&H to use its Community Service Block Grant (CSBJ) funding to sponsor events at Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall in Juneau.

In 2017, Congress passed the Indian Employment, Training and Allied Services Act, which made the demonstration project PL 102-477 permanent.

Under this act, Alaska Native tribes and entities can integrate federal funding for employment, education, and training-related services into a single plan, program, and budget, which improves efficiency of services and allows more program dollars to go directly into support services.

Specific events include hot meals for tribal citizen elders in addition to funerals, forty-day feasts, and Ku.éex’ for income-eligible tribal citizens.

“The PL 102-477 is truly proving to be a great tool that gives us the flexibility to serve our people better and deliver services more efficiently,” said President Richard Chalyee Éesh Peterson. “This amendment not only expands our support services for our elders in Juneau, but gives us the ability to dedicate our Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall as a space for cultural events and to tribal citizens when they need it most. »

CSBG funding included in the tribe’s plan PL 102-477 is intended to support a wide variety of activities that help low-income or homeless families and individuals in Juneau.

The funds are managed by Janice Hotch, Director of Business and Economic Development.

Over the next few months, the Tlingit & Haida Business and Economic Development Department will develop the application process and eligibility criteria to offer the Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall to tribal citizens seeking space for funerals and traditional events.

An announcement will be made once the new program is launched.
