‘We see them every year’: Businesses unite to sponsor residents’ Christmas lights

MANY businesses have rallied to sponsor a family’s Christmas light display – which many locals say marks the start of the festivities in Winsford.

Every year David Robinson, who lives in Station Road, decorates his home with a huge range of Christmas lights and decorations – something that has been enjoyed by countless families in the area over the years and has raised thousands books for charity.

With the cost of living rising, it was unclear if the lights would go ahead this year, but David’s daughter Stephanie Banks hit on the idea of approaching local businesses for sponsorship via social media.

David and his family have been overwhelmed with support as businesses pledge to help with electricity costs and new lights to allow the tradition to continue.

The lights are for the benefit of St Luke’s Hospice and donations can be made to gofundme.com/f/station-road-christmas-lights.

The sponsors are:

  • CW Realtors
  • Winsford Town Football Club
  • All your appliances
  • Europas
  • Lomas log burners
  • EDD electric
  • Martin James Decorating Services
  • A2Z Flat Pack Services
  • PuceX
  • Indigo Promotions (Banner Sponsor)
  • Roofing Carl Duckett & Co.

Europlas’ Simon Lomax explained: “We really appreciate the tradition they have created over the years – it’s invaluable to the community, local schools and charities.

“We personally take our children to see the lights every year and it’s always a joy when we pass by.

“We will continue to uphold this tradition.”

CW Estate Agents also views the annual lights as a festive tradition for the whole family.

They said: “When we heard that with the current economic climate the lights might not happen, as a local business and family we were eager to partner with like-minded local businesses to make sure Dave and his family can continue the great work they are doing for St Luke’s and give the people of Winsford a much needed and deserved Xmas Cheer.

Danny Fitzpatrick of DF Plumbing and Heating added: “I wanted to give something back to the local community and since I was a child I have loved David’s Christmas lights and look forward to seeing them every year.

“Having all the money raised go to St Luke’s Hospice is the icing on the cake for me.”

Rachel Hughes, of St Luke’s Hospice, said: ‘Mr. and Mrs Robinson and their family have supported St Luke’s (Cheshire) Hospice for many, many years.

“Times have been particularly difficult with the rising cost of living and this year many local businesses have so kindly sponsored their lights to allow the much loved event to take place.

“Mr Robinson has put so much effort and preparation into getting the house ready for our local community to enjoy every Christmas.

“Families come from far and wide to see these breathtaking festivities.

“It really is the start of the Christmas party once their Christmas lights turn on comes to our town.

“A big thank you to everyone this year to everyone involved.”

The lighting will take place on Friday, December 2 at 6 p.m.

They will shine from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday and from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

The last night of lights will be Boxing Day night.
